What is Achilles tendinopathy?
The achilles tendon is the longest tendon the body and it is a springy band of tissue at the back of the ankle and above your heel.
It allows you to point and flex your toes/feet.
Where the tendon it is being overused, stepping up your exercise too quickly, wearing high heels muscles or tendons in the leg that are too tight it can cause a tendinitis whereby the tendon can become very swollen and painful.
In severe achilles tendon injury it can tear partially or rupture completely.
Symptoms of this condition
- Pain along the back of your foot and above your heel especially when stretching your ankle or standing on your toes
- If you rupture the tendon, pain can be abrupt and severe
- Tenderness, swelling, stiffness
- Difficulty flexing your foot or pointing your toes (in complete tears of the tendon
