What is Plantar fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a very important structure within the foot. The Plantar fascia is a band that runs from the heel bone to the underside of all toes.

Damage can be caused to this area from a poorly functioning arch, ankle joint or an accumulation of minor trauma that builds up over the years.

Plantar fasciitis can not only be stubborn by very painful. Risk factors include: long periods of standing, overweight, medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus.

High heeled shoes, poor arches, a tight achilles or ‘heel cords’.

Symptoms of this condition

  • Pain at the bottom of your foot, especially at the centre of the calcaneus
  • Worse in the morning for the first few steps, standing for long periods of time
  • Increased levels of activity
  • Redness and swelling can also be present
